Roll your own external RAID?

I’ve been wanting to create an independent home server with a built in RAID, but I don’t have the room for a full tower anywhere. I have looked at the shuttle small footprint boxes, but they don’t have enough bays for a RAID. I’m thinking about buying an external IDE enclosure and setting it along side a shuttle, allowing me to have say four drives. This would be much cheaper than a real external RAID. The only question I have is how the external drives connect in to the PC. Do they make PCI controller cards with external ports?
